Department of Archaeology UGM Hosts Public Lecture by Takeshi Hasegawa (Ibaraki University, Japan) on Paleomagnetism

Yogyakarta, 28 January 2026 — The Department of Archaeology, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada, held a public lecture on Wednesday (28/1) at the Multimedia Room, Margono Building, Faculty of Cultural Sciences UGM. The event featured an international speaker, Takeshi Hasegawa from Ibaraki University, Japan.

The public lecture was titled “Applications of Volcanology to Archaeology Utilizing Paleomagnetism and Geochemical Data” and discussed the application of paleomagnetic and geochemical approaches in archaeological studies. In his presentation, Prof. Hasegawa explained the methods of paleomagnetic dating as well as the development of MATLAB-based software used to process and interpret paleomagnetic data for determining the age of samples.

Through this activity, students and members of the academic community of the Department of Archaeology gained insights into the application of earth sciences in archaeological research, particularly in understanding past processes and chronological frameworks. This public lecture also contributed to strengthening international academic networks and promoting interdisciplinary perspectives in archaeological studies.
