In 2023, the Archaeology Department of Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) held a Field Study activity at one of the prehistoric sites, namely the Bangkang Cave Site, Lombok. This field study activity aims to provide direct experience to students in understanding working conditions in the field and recognizing deeper aspects of archaeology in the region.

In this activity which was attended by UGM Archaeology students, participants were invited to go directly to the archaeological work field, make observations, and coordinate in teams to complete the assigned research tasks. Students learn excavation techniques, recording site data, and analyzing findings in locations that are famous for their archaeological remains.

Goa Bangkang is one of the sites in Lombok that holds various prehistoric remains. This site is an interesting location to study because it has unique geological formations and artifact findings that reflect prehistoric human life in the area.

In this activity, students had the opportunity to use various archaeological methods, including surface survey, site mapping, and stratigraphic analysis. In addition, they are also taught how to identify and document artifacts found during the activity.

The UGM Department of Archaeology continues to be committed to implementing the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, which includes education, research, and community service. This Field Study activity is part of UGM’s efforts to produce graduates who not only have a strong understanding of theory but are also able to apply their knowledge in real situations.
