Haybah Shabira, an Archaeology student at UGM, successfully received the Breaking Adjudicator award, an institutional judge accreditation, while also participating in a debate competition. IVED 2024 (Indonesia Varsity English Debating 2024) is an annual debate tournament and one of the most prestigious competitions in Indonesia’s debating community. The 2024 chapter of IVED was hosted by the University of Lampung in March 2024.
Behind Haybah’s success in earning the award, she initially experienced anxiety and fear due to a lack of confidence in her debating experience. However, she managed to turn her worries into determination while competing in the debate.
“IVED 2024 was my first time serving as an institutional judge at a competition, so there was definitely some anxiety and fear at the beginning. Especially because I didn’t have as much experience in debating compared to my peers in the Gadjah Mada Debating Society (GMDS). Before the competition, I joined training sessions from seniors in GMDS and learned a lot in order to prepare myself as UGM’s delegate,” Haybah explained.
Haybah felt that receiving the award was truly surprising, given her relatively limited experience in the debate world—something she only began exploring upon entering UGM. Her achievement at IVED 2024 has become a source of motivation for her to continue growing in debating and improving her skills. She hopes to keep making GMDS and UGM proud, both on the national and international stage.
Haybah’s persistence and success in the debate competition reflects the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in the area of Quality Education, by enhancing students’ skills. With the interest and talent she possesses, it is hoped that students like her will continue to learn and become a source of inspiration to others.
